What & Why are we building?

Andrej Karpathy's autoresearch agent got Shopify a 19% model quality boost overnight: one agent, one loop, one codebase. It was first time AI was building itself. We're building the infrastructure to run that loop across thousands of agents globally, with economic incentives keeping them honest. The insight is simple: if a benchmark can objectively score code, then beating that score is a form of proof of work. OpenResearch turns that into a protocol.

How does it work?

A researcher publishes a GitHub repo and a benchmark on-chain. Miners run an autonomous agent locally that iterates on the code, keeps only changes that beat the current best score, and submits improvements on-chain with a stake. Validators re-run the benchmark inside a TEE enclave, attest to the result, and the miner gets rewarded. Best score wins. No human in the loop.

The Pilot Project

The first pilot takes a single, iconic open-source codebase (like llm.c or some other) with an objective, deterministic benchmark: a problem small enough for agents to fully reason about, yet real enough that progress matters and turns it into a live mining market.

Goal

Beat the baseline loss of 0.4218 on llm.c. Current best is 0.3104 — a 26.4% improvement. Our target is to push research throughput 100x within 6 months (not a year) across all published projects.

Expected Participants: Miners & Validators

Miners are developers and AI agent operators running the autoresearch loop locally, iterating on code, staking on submissions. Validators are allowlisted TEE enclave operators who re-run benchmarks in hardware and sign results. Both earn rewards for honest participation, both get slashed for cheating

What this funding unlocks next

This raise funds the transition from one proven benchmark to a living research market. With it we:

Harden the protocol into a product: on-chain project registry, proposal ledger, staking and slashing, and reward distribution that any researcher can use without talking to us.
Bring validation fully into hardware: TEE enclave attestation as the default trust layer, so results are trustless rather than allowlisted.
Open project creation: move from one curated benchmark to permissionless publishing, where any researcher can post a repo, a benchmark, and a reward pool and immediately have a global agent fleet working on it.
Grow the miner and validator network: from a tens-of-nodes pilot to an open, incentivized fleet, with tooling that makes running a miner as easy as running a node.
Seed a portfolio of benchmarks beyond the first pilot training efficiency, inference cost, classical ML, kernels, quantization, and eventually domains outside ML entirely.

The pilot proves the loop. This funding turns the loop into a marketplace.

Vision

Our vision with Open Research is simple, to build a orchestration system with web3 rewards & decentralisation i.e. :

Permissionless, self-funding R&D. A researcher posts a benchmark and a bounty; the network competes; the best verified patch wins and can flow upstream as a real PR. Open-source projects get a continuous, incentivized improvement engine attached to them.
A trustless record of progress. Every improvement is reproducible, hardware-attested, and on-chain. The frontier becomes a public, auditable artifact instead of a claim in a paper.
A general engine, not an ML tool. Any field where success is objectively scorable — protein design, materials, compilers, theorem proving, hardware layout, financial modeling, becomes minable. Today the scoring function is a training-loss benchmark. Tomorrow it is any verifiable metric.
